ABSTRACT

Among various environmental problems facing the world today, climate change and biodiversity loss are the most global in nature. Unlike other transnational environmental problems, sometimes referred to as ‘global environmental issues’, the causes of climate change and biodiversity degradation are truly ubiquitous, and the results pose threats on a global scale. In the last few decades of the twentieth century, the emergence of these genuinely global environmental issues has brought about new platforms for international consensus. The UN has played a significant role in constructing such platforms, providing various arenas for governments and non-governmental actors to deliberate, seek consensus and craft conventions as well as protocols, such as the UNFCCC and CBD.
