ABSTRACT

One phenomenon of contemporary global change is progressive urbanization. More and more people live in cities. Their accelerated growth, how they grow, as well as the complex global processes in which they are embedded – such as the emergence of new economic geographies, the need for global resource management, the handling of climate change, and the rebuilding of the world’s food systems, to name just a few – are providing cities with increasingly comprehensive and novel challenges. At the same time, cities foster creativity and inspire change and innovation.
