ABSTRACT

In October 2010, the city of Nagoya, Japan, hosted the 5th Meeting of the Parties (COP-MOP5) to the Cartagena Protocol on Biosafety (Cartagena Protocol) under the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD). The main objective of the Cartagena Protocol is to ensure an adequate level of protection in handling, transport and use of living modified organisms (LMOs) that may have adverse effects on the conservation and sustainable use of biological diversity, taking also into account risks to human health and specifically focusing on transboundary movements.
