ABSTRACT

A number of questions were raised at the outset in this book – the pertinence of which derived from the conception of the book. These questions raised doubts about the applicability of theories of retail change such as the retail life cycle, the wheel of retailing, or other cyclical or conflict concepts vis-à-vis the study of retailing in emerging markets. Questions were raised about the nature of consumer behaviour in emerging markets and their impact on retail modernisation. The significance of public policy around retailing in emerging markets was also to be explored in this book, primarily to consider the impact of the rapidity with which the retail sector is developing in these markets.
