ABSTRACT

Taiwan is an island nation off the East Coast of China where the official language is Mandarin Chinese. The country is densely populated, with over 23 million inhabitants. Despite there being a large number of highly reputable universities in Taiwan, the country is less geared towards attracting international students than neighbouring Japan, China and Singapore. Despite this, the number of international students choosing to study in Taiwan is rapidly increasing. The country is trying to position itself as a gateway for Western students to study Chinese language and culture, particularly American students.
