ABSTRACT

This chapter explores the social processes involved in memory, arguing that remembering is a social activity where both process and product create meaning. Our understanding of memory relates directly to our understanding of mind, previously discussed, and it is central also to our understanding of learning. Individuals sometimes have a tendency to equate memory and learning, but for us, this is not the case. This chapter outlines our understanding of memory and is built around two fundamental questions:

What is memory?

Why do we remember and forget?
