ABSTRACT

In this chapter we focus on the ways in which information and communication technology (ICT) can support and enhance children’s learning in science. In particular we consider the role of digital technologies in learning: from the most obvious use of computers in supporting written communication to the less common use of digital multimedia to enhance observation and visualisation; from the solo use of mobile technologies to access information to the collaborative group work afforded by social networking. All of these technologies are now readily available to so many of our youngest children in their lives outside school that the challenge of harnessing them in the cause of science learning is not one educators can choose to avoid. What is essential, however, is that how we use ICT must be firmly linked to discussions in other chapters about the importance of learning and understanding constructed through children discussing ideas, thinking, exploring and developing the skills and attitudes of science.
