ABSTRACT
Just as there are overarching powerful ideas in science that enable us to make sense of detailed facts, so in science education there are some general principles which apply across the details of different curricula and teaching approaches that are introduced from time to time. Principles express values and standards which should guide decisions. A set of such statements from an international group of science educators is given in Box 1.1.
