ABSTRACT

This introduction presents an overview of key concepts covered in the subsequent chapters of this book. The book discusses the most important and promising international effort that has been undertaken to deal with greenhouse gas (GHG) and climate change the program known as Reducing Emissions from Deforestation and Forest Degradation (REDD) in developing countries. Measurement, Reporting, and Verification (MRV) is the costliest part of REDD implementation. The UN-REDD Programme is a collaboration between three primary organizations that are able to assist developing countries in the design and implementation of REDD. For stakeholders it is important to understand and be a part of REDD, as they are the ones who will feel the greatest impact of REDD. The book explains how REDD has evolved from first considering forests as part of climate mitigation to an expanded role that includes much more. It provides a more detailed examination of the problems associated with REDD.
