ABSTRACT

Although the direct, explicit teaching of vocabulary to students at all grade levels is critical, we fail our students if we stop there. Although one of the ultimate goals is certainly to augment our students’ vocabulary, another very important goal is to make them independent word learners. Independence, for the most part, is a function of two factors:

1. Instilling a curiosity about words and

2. Developing the skill of analyzing words to figure out what they mean.
