ABSTRACT
Looked at through the lens of expansion, retention, use, and strategy, we’d say that traditional assessments are getting the job done only partially. That is to say, our assessments need to be more accurate and more comprehensive. Humans (including students!) know words on a continuum:
♦ At one end are those words about which we have very nonspecific acquaintance-we are only vaguely familiar with their meanings.
