ABSTRACT

This chapter focuses on the third component, the common goal, leadership development for the purpose of contributing to the greater good, beyond the leaders and the followers. It also investigates how leadership takes on macro level, the greater good, through the action of individuals and organizations at the micro level, small acts that ripple around the world. The chapter introduces an artifact, Francois-Leon Sicard's 'The Good Samaritan', a sculpture of two individuals brought together by special circumstances. However, Sicard's sculpture cannot be fully appreciated unless the people understand the Parable of the Good Samaritan by Jesus of Nazareth. Further, the sculpture is placed in a setting, the Tuileries Gardens in Paris that in itself also has symbolic power. It also explores the concept of leadership as social responsibility, as well as the moral dimension. Leadership for the greater good focuses on how leaders and followers attend to the interests of the collective.
