ABSTRACT
The analysis of fields of discourse will be spread over two chapters. In this chapter we’ll look at the ways in which speakers establish and develop a field of discourse in general terms, and in Chapter 3 we’ll look more specifically at how speakers construe different participants’ involvement in the activities being represented or carried out. This will involve a relatively in-depth account of the transitivity system in English.
