ABSTRACT
Old High German literature begins about a.d. 770, when the first extant German documents appear. 1 But most of the linguistic features characteristic of the Old High German dialects had begun to develop before then – some as early as the fifth century, it is thought – and many had already reached completion before the first documents were written. We shall make no distinction between the pre-documentary and documentary stages.
