ABSTRACT
During a unit on skeletons, to show Initial Understanding, a student may be asked to illustrate a skeleton (drawing) and describe (oral presentation in this chapter and writing in following chapters) five bones in the drawing. To show Developing an Interpretation, the student may be asked to compare the bones in the leg with the bones in the arm. To show Making Connections, the student may be asked to compare the bones in a human arm with the bones in a bird’s wing. To show Critical Stance, the student may be asked to judge which picture of a skeleton is the best one to teach about bones. A unit on the skeleton would involve students in all four levels of comprehension. One particular performance task would engage primary-age students in only one of the levels of comprehension. It would take a series of tasks to cover all four levels of comprehension.
