ABSTRACT

Despite the emphasis modern culture places on the images, sound, and motion of electronic media, reading and writing are still the most fundamental tools for communicating, aside from speech. The Internet and e-mail are changing what we read and how we read, but not our need to read and write. Students will need to know how to write more succinctly and how to skim doc uments for information more quickly than their parents' genera tion did, if they are to survive in the information age.
