ABSTRACT
The most serious criticism of traditional tests is that the range of student knowledge and skill they can test is extremely limited. Many aspects of understanding to which teachers (and their communities) are most committed simply don't lend themselves to multiple-choice assessment. Identifying the different categories of educational purposes (instructional goals) and considering how they can be assessed helps illustrate this point.
