First, it should be made clear that when teachers use per­ formance assessment, they don't stop using traditional forms of assessment. Tests will always be with us, and they should be. It is frequently important to ascertain what students know about a subject; alternatively, we must be sure that they have read an assignment. There is no substitute for a quiz or a test to ascertain these things. But as a steady diet, tests have seri­ ous limitations. These are described below.
