ABSTRACT

The introduction of a block schedule requires high school teachers who have maintained the traditional one-dimensional role of lecturer to shift to a multidimensional perspective integrating a variety of teaching and learning models. Among the strategies long used by elementary school teachers and successfully adapted by middle and high school teachers is the learning center approach. Learning centers, also called learning stations, provide individual students or pairs of students with the opportunity to

• Practice skills already introduced to the whole group; • Extend knowledge and skills beyond those gained by the

typical classmate; • Rehearse knowledge and skills before assessment; • Practice knowledge and skills that were not mastered in

an earlier unit.
