ABSTRACT

There are many denitions of empowerment, but the one we like best is from Kouzes and Posner (2002), who indicate that empowerment is the act of giving our own power away. Poet-philosopher Noah benShea described empowerment in this way: “My willingness to become less, made her more.” Empowering others is never about having power over, nor is it about sharing power with. Instead, when we empower others, we give them power to be creative, take risks, nd solutions, and do what needs to be done to help establish a positive climate in the school. When we give others permission to think and act, we build trust.
