ABSTRACT

Generally, when we think of consistency, we think of doing exactly the same thing at the same time, and most likely in the same manner. Ralph Waldo Emerson referred to this when he wrote, “A foolish consistency is the hobgoblin of little minds.” But, in reality, there are numerous denitions for consistency, such as uniformity or steadfastness. Steadfastness is the best description of what we mean by being consistent as a trust builder, because steadfastness suggests an adherence to the same principles over time. So, to build trust by being consistent, one must have an understanding of one’s principles and the willingness and ability to steadfastly uphold these principles. When leaders exhibit a consistent commitment to principles, they build trust in themselves and in the organization.
