ABSTRACT

During the 1990s, the 4/4 semester block schedule became one of the most widely implemented high school block schedules in the Uni ted States. In some states, this popular scheduling model is referred to as the "accelerated" schedule, primarily because it permits students to acquire 24 credits in 3 years and to graduate early. In other states, the model is called the "four-period day" or the "Block 4" schedule, while in some school districts it is referred to as semestering (see Canady & Rettig, 1995b, Chapter 3 for a detailed discussion of this high school model).
