ABSTRACT

To Get Started Marzano (2010) describes the use of pictures and symbols to learn information as “nonlinguistic representation of text.” His research shows that use of techniques that capitalize on nonlinguistic representation of text can increase student achievement by as much as seventeen percent (Marzano, 2010). Marzano provides !ve keys to making nonlinguistic representations of text work:

1. Nonlinguistic representations of text can come in many forms. There isn’t one “right way” to help a student use this strategy when many different types of symbols, pictures, pictographs, graphic organizers, and charts can help words make sense.
