ABSTRACT

This chapter is for students in Grades 3 and above, although some fluent readers in Grade 2 may be able to use it with guidance. (A protocol to use with younger students can be found in Appendix C). Regardless of grade level, some students will need guidance in reading and/or using the concepts in the chapter to formulate their own plan. Therefore it is suggested that the chapter be used as a classroom activity to allow students to benefit from the ideas of others. Like the other chapters in this book, this chapter includes 10 steps that students should do to become higher achieving students, and support the rest of the stakeholder groups. You may see the alignment to your own list as you work with your students on theirs. The activities at the end of the chapter can be used as assignments and topics for discussion. A suggested outline for presenting the chapter follows. Whether the chapter is covered over a week, over a month, or some other timeframe must be up to the teacher's judgment. In any case, it should be revisited several times during the school year to allow students to consider their progress and renew their commitments. You may want some of the activities to be completed at home so that parents are encouraged to become involved in their child's plan. Be sure to communicate with parents, especially those involved in this venture with you, to inform them of how you will be using this chapter, and how they might best support you.
