ABSTRACT

When planning for whole group professional development throughout the year, math coaches consider the needs of the school community and the time allocated. What short-term goals need attention? What instructional strategies are currently being implemented? Which concepts are still challenging for students to learn? What is the focus topic for the year? For example, if vocabulary development or writing in mathemat ics is a key topic for this school site, how can the coach facilitate whole group sessions that increase these opportunities for teachers? How can teacher and student work be used to show notation, representation, and reasoning and proof? How can these experiences be presented in the context of writing and using clear and precise math language?
