ABSTRACT

It’s dismissal time, and you are standing outside of your school building watching the kids leave for the day. Before they are out of the door, they are powering up the technology with which they interact with the world: cell phones, iPods, smart phones, laptops, and other hand-held computing devices. As William Kist (2010) says, “the kids are getting back in touch with the world after hours of forced disconnect” (p. 1). Nowadays, most middle and high school kids carry with them a cell phone or smart phone that is crammed with more sophisticated digital technology than was found on the Apollo spacecraft that carried twentieth century explorers to the moon and back.
