ABSTRACT

We think of using technology to differentiate instruction in terms of what students can do with technology. Another arena to be discussed in this chapter is the use of sophisticated data warehouse information to guide teachers in decisions about how to find students where they are and take them to where they need to be. A data warehouse is a centralized collection of statistical information about students. I may include standardized test scores, report card grades, local final exam grades, and demographic data. Data warehousing is a complex and technical field involving lots of metaphorical jargon, such as data cleansing, cubes and cube browsers, data archeology, ECTL processes, and others. I mention this because it’s easy to feel overwhelmed by the language of data warehousing, as if we don’t already have enough new things to learn as teachers.
