ABSTRACT

In this chapter, we return to Markham Middle School as Jay is beginning his last year before retirement. He has served for 12 years as the school's principal. We will see how teacher leadership has evolved in the years since our first visit to MMS in Chapter 2. The entire MMS story serves to identify the intentional actions that Jay and the teachers took to ensure that teacher leading and learning will continue. In addition, there were disrupters that might have caused the school to stray from its intended purposes. We use the most common ones as organizers to offer a few powerful strategies to minimize negative effects of these disrupters and lead to a self-sustaining system. Finally, we offer a few words from Jay as encouragement to current and future

principals in their work to promote, build, and sustain teacher leading and learning.
