ABSTRACT

No matter how weak or strong a student’s writing may be, it’s always our job to find a way to move that student up. Students will, with instruction, move up one notch at a time. To help them do this, we need to understand that writing is a multifaceted skill comprising five elements:

The ability to interpret the parameters of a question and deliver an answer that meets expectations (Focus).

The ability to provide sufficient detail to satisfy the demands of the question (Development).

The ability to structure and form information in a manner that facilitates the reader’s comprehension (Organization).

The ability to choose the proper diction and syntax for the audience and purpose (Language).

The ability to adhere to the conventions of standard written English (Presentation).
