ABSTRACT

As the standardized test movement strengthens, those with objections to standardized testing, and particularly to writing on demand, push back. The National Council of Teachers of English is a notable force in the resistance to widespread, high-stakes tests required by the federal No Child Left Behind (NCLB) act. The NCTE frowns on on-demand writing, believing it to be formulaic and believing, furthermore, that formulaic writing suppresses voice, reflection, and creativity.
