ABSTRACT

The Clear and Unclear Windows assessment technique is simple and straightforward. Asking students to list things that are clear to them and things that are not clear to them forces them to think about what they are learning well and where the problems lie. Students can use Clear and Unclear Windows to pose big-picture questions. Another mix-and-match technique is to combine Clear and Unclear Windows with Post It Up. Melody notes that The statements, both clear and unclear, make good material for discussion. This chapter suggests to conduct this as an activity with the class at least several times a month in order to ensure adequate opportunity for each of the students to let one know just what is clear and unclear to them. As students become more adept at writing Clear and Unclear Windows, they will help to take the teaching to deeper levels of knowledge and insight.
