ABSTRACT

It is widely known that parents are potentially the most important players in a child's education. The Parents on Board strategy does what its name suggests—it gets parents directly involved in their child's school work. The strategy is not designed to be an occasional approach to parent/child cooperation. Parents need to be asked in specific, concrete ways to offer their help. Three levels of parent help have promise, ranging from minimally engaged to high levels of engagement. The first level is simply a concrete suggestion of something for parents to do to facilitate their child's learning. A second level of parent help is that of helping a child to carry out the child's homework in ways that go beyond mere enforcement of time and place. A third level of parent help is that of inviting parents to take part in the curriculum itself.
