ABSTRACT

The Standards set requirements not only for English language arts (ELA) but also for literacy in history or social studies, science and technical subjects. Literacy standards using their content area expertise to help students meet the particular challenges of reading, writing, speaking, listening and language in their respective field. In the teaching of writing, Donald Murray, Steve Graham, Robert Marzano, Flannery O'Connor and Peter Elbow caught my attention. Experience the benefit from writing about new knowledge in their fine arts, foreign language, health, literature, math, science, social studies or technology curriculum, they want the benefit to continue. In the Writing Cycle, students meet word or sentence study at least twice a week, providing a healthy break from focus on writing in a way that continues to effect growth in writing. Yet within the time window scheduled for prewriting, students operate at their own pace, shifting in and out of word and sentence studies at their own pace.
