ABSTRACT

Rip Van Winkle Rip Van Winkle awoke from his 300-year nap this year. He started the

nap in 1708, and so nothing looked familiar as he walked through the streets of New York. When he had fallen asleep, New York had all been farmland, and the people had been farmers. He had slept through the Agricultural and Industrial Revolutions so all of this had now changed. Most people were now service workers and seIlers of knowledge. Nothing was familiar until he walked into a school.
