ABSTRACT

Franklin Schargel recently told an audience of superintendents that there is no such thing as a high school dropout. After a very quiet pause, Schargel went on to explain that drop-out potential begins so early in our schools that students don't drop out, they dirn out. He quoted research that indicates that third-grade teachers can predict with 85 percent accuracy the students in their classes who will drop out of school. Data frorn arecent study conducted by Arizona State University's School of Education shows that the process begins in kindergarten.
