ABSTRACT

Flashcards of vocabulary and essential questions are a necessary part of the teacher’s toolbox for each unit. You can also use them to review culture, content, and questions. If you can, find pictures of the vocabulary so students can identify the word in the target language from a picture. Also use written flashcards so students see the word and its spelling. One easy way to make flashcards is by typing them up in Microsoft Word. Use the largest font you can and print them on cardstock. If you already type up your vocabulary list, simply copy and paste the list into a new document, adjust the size, and print them out. If you need a spare moment to take attendance or want to promote more student participation, offer the opportunity to review flashcards to a student in class. Many students enjoy leading the review, and it also allows those antsy students to get up out of their desks. Use flashcards to review at the beginning of the class as a warm-up activity or at the end of the hour if you have a few spare minutes.
