ABSTRACT

Academic literacy: Students need to learn to employ specific strategies to effectively read/use a text, and often these must be taught (or retaught). Examples of this:

Studying the photos on a page before reading the page

Using the dictionary portion at the back of the book

Using the table of contents and index

Reading headings and footnotes

Looking for words in bold print or italics

Using online resource materials to supplement the text

Organizing data

Reading maps and charts

Evaluating the validity and authenticity of sources

Adjusted questioning: When a teacher alters the word choice and complexity of discourse or text to accommodate students’ prior knowledge and current level of knowledge, he or she is using adjusted questioning. This is a simple way to differentiate for individual students or small groups within the same class.
