ABSTRACT

Depending on a variety of factors (i.e., your position in a school, the demographics of your community, the most recent dealing you had with a parent), your personal, generalized description of today’s parents may or may not be a positive one. All of us, at some point in our careers, are faced with difficult parents who can single-handedly destroy our faith in the institution of parenthood. In the difficult and stressful times we experience working in our schools, even the most positive among us can succumb to feelings of extreme negativity brought on by dealing with these parents. Upon reflection, though, it is hopeful that we can recognize that these difficult individuals are not necessarily representative of all parents. Beyond being hopeful, it is necessary that we remember that most parents are not intentionally difficult.
