ABSTRACT

Obviously, one of the first things that we need to do in order to diminish the amount of “that’s not fair” comments is to be fair. Not only, of course, to be fair, but to be perceived as being fair. Gary Phillips (1997) once said that, “Treating unequals equally is no justice.” We do agree. If we are working with people, especially young people, there are always going to be situations in which we cannot have a predetermined response. There are always going to be judgment calls. However, any time that we can have predetermined expectations and consequences that we have communicated appropriately can help to reduce the unfair chanting. Of course, even these predetermined standards must be reasonable.
