ABSTRACT

This introduction presents an overview of key concepts discussed in the subsequent chapters of this book. The book investigates the practical implications of what is described as the "new philanthropy". It examines how philanthropy has changed over the past decade and how this is articulated in the global context. The book also examines the Rockefeller Foundation's support for PDP (product development partnerships) for neglected and communicable diseases. Then it moves on to the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation and investigates its relationship with the GAVI Alliance, widely seen as one of the most important global health PPP (public-private partnerships) and an early beneficiary of the foundation's global health largesse. It explores how the foundation, which made its entry onto the global health landscape just as the new partnership agenda was taking shape, was instrumental in catalyzing the GAVI Alliance. The book discusses the Rockefeller and Gates Foundations' (Alliance for a Green Revolution in Africa) AGRA.
