ABSTRACT

The middle classes in Weimar Germany were searching for an ideology, an alternative to democracy and communism. Volkism was already part of their thinking. The Conservative party became increasingly Volkist, particularly after Alfred Hugenberg, a founder of the Pan-Germans, became its leader. Where Hitler demonstrated his satanic brilliance was in making anti-semitism the cornerstone of his ideology. By turning the people's hatred against the Jews, he averted a genuine social revolution. German high finance was not the enemy but Jewish international high finance was. German socialism was not the enemy but international Jewish Marxism was. The theory of a world-wide Jewish conspiracy against the Aryan race was elaborated. The cinema, like the other arts, came under the supervision of the Reichskulturkammer and Goebbels, as an ardent ciné aste always took a detailed personal interest in German films.
