ABSTRACT

I have set out in this book to explore what I have called the Cinema of the Right, three basically conservative movements which have through the medium of film projected their own visions of the perfect society. But while all three movements, American populism, British Imperialism and German Nazism, are right-wing, they are certainly not to be equated and are in many respects very different from one another. For each is the culmination of a long process of historical, cultural and ideological development within its own country of origin. It would perhaps be true to say that all of them began as radical alternatives : populism to federalism, Imperialism to Little Englandism and Nazism to Weimar democracy. But all three rapidly took on the status of orthodoxies and as such became hallowed and enshrined.
