ABSTRACT

During the war, and the years which immediately preceded it, the control of the British cinematograph industry passed into new hands, and it has in effect remained in them since. Alan Wood in particular has explained how this came about. The Rank empire, with which they were particularly concerned, was not, they say, built by any deliberate planning, calculated aggrandisement for Machiavellian scheming. Arthur Rank simply inherited the fruits of other people's financial skill and put the results together. Most of the opportunities that came his way did so by chance. But he took risks. He was most courageous and showed outstanding capacity for making up his mind and for giving decisions quickly.
