ABSTRACT

The social work ending phase is called the termination phase. The Council on Social Work Education (CSWE) leaders, social work experts have identified some specific tasks that are common to the helping work of facilitating transitions and ending. Each theoretical framework provides a conceptualization of the ending phase, a vision of the optimal state or processes indicating readiness for ending, and insight into particular issues and opportunities that may emerge during the ending phase. There are some general non-theoretical factors that workers consider as they tailor the ending process to the client system. In matching a theory-based ending approach to specific circumstances, practitioners may need to rely for now on case studies and practice wisdom. Bowen and rsquo approach to family systems theory provides illustration of theory-based ending. According to this approach, recipients of family therapy services are ready for the ending phase when they have achieved a high degree of differentiation of self from their marriage and/or family system.
