ABSTRACT

What a joy teaching would be if every teacher liked every student, but as my dad used to say, “If wishes were horses, beggars would ride.” We can’t afford to let the ideal goal keep us from reaching a realistic objective, any more than we can afford to wait around until the ideal conditions for change present themselves. Maybe that focus on the ideal is what leads others to say that it takes three to eight years to achieve significant change. What if we focus on something a little more concrete? What if we tell our teachers, “Whether you like a student or not, act as if you do”? Isn’t this a more reasonable, achievable, and even measurable goal? You bet it is!
