ABSTRACT

Over the years, I have had the good fortune to direct a number of dissertation projects. Their sheer scope and complexity can make the process seem overwhelming. Often, the most daunting moment comes when all the research is done and it’s time to start writing. I tell doctoral candidates to jump-start the process by writing just one page-preferably the page they’re most eager to write at that moment. It might end up in the middle of the paper or toward the end; they might even delete it in a later revision. However, if they can start with that nugget of one page, at least they are on their way.
