ABSTRACT
Social norms within college classrooms infl uence the likelihood that students will offer comments and ask questions. As you know from the previous chapter, symbolic interactionists have studied the interactional processes through which these norms are created and maintained and the degree to which they refl ect competing situational defi nitions between students and professors.
