ABSTRACT

These paintings were done by individuals with schizophrenia, a psychiatric disorder characterized by incoherent and irrational thoughts and behaviors. Individuals who suffer from schizophrenia often depict their disease as fragmenting or distorting their sense of themselves and reality (Wadeson and Carpenter 1976). Their perception, affect, and behavior lack stability and consistency. This is in contrast to nondisordered individuals, for whom the self organizes both thought and action into coherent and meaningful patterns.
