ABSTRACT

In Chapter 3 the characteristics of high-performing knowledge cities were examined through the perspectives of economic, societal, spatial and institutional development. It seems clear that any city would like to pursue goals such as the economic prosperity, health and happiness of its citizens; a reasonable cost of living; an availability of good jobs; a healthy business sector; a vibrant entertainment and art scene; an enjoyable natural environment; and safety. Because this seems to be the case, how can administrators, development professionals and managers in cities and in their regions drive the development toward those goals? This chapter introduces knowledge-based performance management as an approach for the managers of cities and their regions for addressing the question posed. In relation to the four main objectives of this book, this chapter mainly contributes on the fourth one dealing with the management of knowledge in cities and regions. However, in order to be able to discuss about the ways of managing knowledge, it is necessary to explore the managerial implications of the key issues covered by the other research questions.
