ABSTRACT

We have seen that the theories discussed earlier place the zone of therapeutic interaction within the individual psyche. The next four theories conceptualize the zone of therapeutic interaction as within the social systems and context in which the individual exists. That is, systemic and social theories assume that the roles and power relations within our families and communities will construct our internal identity. Social theories conceptualize the zone for transformation as situated not only within the individual, but also within the social systems that surround and give form to the individual, such as the ecological circles of family, community, and state, or global systems of power. Within systemic theories, problems are defi ned as lack of real and social resources due to unjust division of power. Solutions aim to shift roles within systems, to take back both internal and external power and resources, and to actively fi ght for more power in the system.
